Blogger Conf 2015 | Life

Canon masterclass

I took the opportunity to improve my blogging skills this weekend and attended the very first Blogger Conf hosted by EOF | Media. I went with a group of bloggers from ITB Blogger Society.

I love these conferences. There atmosphere is always electric. Bloggers, Youtubers and brands have a place to network and of course it is the place to make new friends!

I was so lucky to meet a number of influential people like Melanie Murphy, Riyadh from Spin 1038 and Glamforce Gail! I literally fan girled the shit out of them all.. I am not even ashamed...

When I am going through the bad times I forget what I love about blogging. So when I surround myself with other like minded people I fall in love all over again.
The sense of community is amazing. For once in my life I feel like I belong (in a room of 500+ strangers- haha!). I come in to myself and it feels great to forget about the grief for a few hours!

I picked up so many tips today that I will use to put out decent content for you all.

Anouska PB(Check out her instagram here) gave a talk about social media and photography. Her style is next level and it gave me so many ideas for future work!

Here's some pictures of the day!

See you soon

My learning style | Life

(I'm setting the scene here with the text below!! This post is to help you figure out your specific learning style...
If you are a school leaver or like me just getting on in life take this test.. It will help you figure out what it is you are good at and what may suit you :))

Have you ever listened to a song and immediately you memorise a song as soon as you hear it!
You could be taught a computer program and master it in minutes...

When I was in school we weren't thought about learning styles the way you are now............

I am the second child of four. I walked at 10 months, I was talking just after.
I thought myself to read at age 2 using my sister's school books.
One of my earlier memories was of my Dad taking Amanda's school book off me so she could go to school and I cried because I was really into the story... (I know ha geeekkkkkk)....

When I started primary school I was two years ahead of the class. I read everything from the back of the toilet rolls (haha you did it too :P) to newspapers.

My ma and da were told to stop letting me read the news as I was repeating things back in class.

(----- I will always thank my parents for being so open with me even when the school treated them badly.. It allowed me to grow as a person  ---)

Not only did they make a show of my parents but the teachers actively put me down in class.
It encouraged bullying, (which followed me throughout school!).

So I realised throughout secondary school  that I could learn and master something by seeing, doing and practice.
I knew I was intelligent but my leaving cert only reflected same on practical subjects that involved projects like Biology and Home etc.
(I always wanted to teach.. I didn't get the points in leaving to teach, left long term job in retail at 21... At 25 I am in training... 27 I am in college)

It wasn't until I started my training to "teach" in current job that I learned about different personality / learning types and realised that I am intelligent but my learning style does not suit the Irish academic system AT ALL!!!

I thought I was different....  I'm not... I am a Kinaesthetic learner...Eg: I am the type of person who has a go before reading instructions... I am a talented make up artist... I can cook something from memory.... I am a talented web designer....

I am also very detailed and cannot make a decision until I consider all factors...
There is a place for EVERYTHING in my home and my car... I freak out if things are not in place.
and that's only the start of it...

If you are in school I would highly encourage these tests that will help with your learning.
If like me you left school within last 10 years this may help you understand the way you are....

Love Louise  xx

Hi | Life update

Hey guys!

I'm back for an update. It's been a few months and if you have been following me on social media then you know I have been minding the noggin and taking it easy.

This week a number of articles have appeared on The Journal.ie (see here) about grieving and bereavement.
I must admit it is hard reading other peoples' stories but it is a lovely and brave thing to be part of. Some of the pieces have been written by terminal disease sufferers and some pieces have been about what to say to someone who is grieving.

You all know at this point that I am in the midst of grieving for my husband Stephen who passed in January 2015.

It is almost comical at times how some people react when they hear this.
I am 27, I have the ability to put on a mask 99% of the time so I don't have to share my pain with the world so when someone new meets me (that's been happening a lot lately- more on that later) you can see the metaphorical jaw being picked up off the floor.

Us Irish are great for keeping things private and not discussing death in public. Cancer used to be a killer for everyone, the survival rates are improving all the time. Poor Stephen was one of the unlucky few,
I don't bring the subject up mostly for fear of what will be thrown back at me. Some people are insensitive and seem to keep at me until they see tears.. Others avoid me like the plague.
It hurts sometimes because I lost two people I thought were friends that way.
Sometimes a simple "how are you getting on"? question is all you need to say. If I say "I'm grand" I don't want to talk. If I start pouring out my worries then I want to talk!

On October 25th just passed, I celebrated my first wedding anniversary. I spent weeks worrying about how I was going to be. I didn't want to make a fuss. I wanted to just live in the moment and have some privacy so I didn't have to feel pressured.
I got locked with Gemma (well I got locked she slept) in a hotel in Loughrea, Galway.  We went to a spa and had a massage and went home the next day.

Grief is like a rollercoaster with lots of peaks and dips. You never know how you are going to feel. One minute I am grand the next I am sobbing. There are flashbacks that haunt me and nice memories that make me laugh,

I am a very spiritual person and believe that Stephen is around me. Meditation helps a lot as I am able to calm myself and being around positive energies helps too.

There is so much more that I could talk about here but a lady needs to keep some secrets hahaha who am I kidding I am a pure bloke! hahaha sorry I am cracking myself up here... ok... tumbleweed passes...

Quick round up of what else I've been up to before I let you back to your day...

- El Dieto stopped after marathon... Emotional eating has been put under control for now so I'm actually following your man Paul McKenna book - I can make you thin link here

This is not a diet, It is about changing the way you think about food. It not only works on your attitudes but also your self esteem and confidence.

I am liking so far!

- I was accepted into and am 8 weeks into college. I am studying Creative Digital Media in Institute of  technology, Blanchardstown. This is a 4 year honours degree course and a blogger/youtuber dream. It involves alot of project work, creating, film making, photography and web design. I am in my element. I am up to my eyes but the motivation to get back into blogging is there.
creativedigitalmedia.ie

- I am the founding member of a blogger society in college! Yay! More work for me but again anything to get the creative juices flowing again

- I'm a qualified Make up artist.. Again.. I went back to get my ITEC certificate over the summer..

- I am working part time again. It's a struggle with course load but I love the place so am working hard to keep the job.

If you made it this far, fair play to you. I will catch you in my next post!

The Great Wood - JD Wetherspoons Review | Life

Hey everyone!

To celebrate the launch of The Great Wood Bar and Restaurant, Blanchardstown I was invited to a training day over the weekend to check out the place before it opened and have something to eat on Wetherspoons! This was to aid staff training but worked out also as an introduction to local businesses and to the local community!
Surprisingly JD Wetherspoons is not well known to a lot of people in Ireland so I will give some background information about the company before I jump in to the review! The Great Wood opens Tuesday 30th June, 2015.

A short history

JD Wetherspoons was founded in 1979 by owner Tim Martin. His first pub was opened in London and it has grown to over 900 pubs since then. The first Wetherspoons hotel opened in 1998. They also run Loyd's No 1 Bars in UK.
JD Wetherspoons offers a restaurant / Pub experience at cheaper prices. Pints start at £2 in UK. They are famous for having no music in any of their venues bar the Loyd's No 1 Bars. Also, the pub names hold significance to the area in which they are located.

JD Wetherspoons announced that they would open 30 pubs over 5 years in Ireland with their first pub 'The Three Tunne Tavern' opening in Blackrock, Co Dublin in July 2014. 'The Forty Foot' in Dun Laoighre, Co Dublin opened in December 2014. 'The Old Borough' in Swords, Co Dublin will open in July 2015 and 'The Linen Weaver' in Cork City has been confirmed to open this September 2015. The old Camden Hall Hostel was acquired by JD Wetherspoons late 2014 but no confirmed opening date has been announced.

The Great Wood

The Great Wood name was chosen by local people in Blanchardstown as the site of the pub was once known as The Great Scald wood in the 1600's and was home to Wolves and Wild Boars!
JD Wetherspoon spent over €4M to purchase the building that was previously Light Nightclub. They have completely refurbished the site and have created a beautiful and relaxing experience for all tastes. (I lived in the nightclub since it first opened under the name West so it was slightly nostalgic walking around the renovated building!)

The idea is that you order your food and drink at the bar, quote your table number and then relax at your table with your drink until your food is brought out to you. Condiments are kept out on the floor for ease of access.
The Blanchardstown site is laid out over two floors with over 200 tables. A varied menu for all palette tastes is offered with 'meal of the day' clubs on every weekday that offers a specific meal and drink included. See here for the menu.

My Experience

First Impressions

We were met at the front entrance by a staff member who was on hand to meet and greet. She gave us a quick tour of the downstairs area and explained how to order. The main bar has about 10 tills that serves beer, ales, wine on tap, cocktails, soft drinks.
The floor is seperated with various styles so you can sit in an area that has traditional lounge seats, or you can sit at tables with basic leather chairs and a sixties feel or you can sit at high tables.
Upstairs there is a second smaller bar with less till points. This floor has more of a restaurant feel and is decorated like a library in one area. I love it! Even the smoking area is beautifully decorated!
By the way girls - the main bathroom downstairs has a long line of mirrors with a table and stool in front so you can do your make up! Well that's how I plan to make use!

On the walls you will find the history behind the name 'The Great Wood' framed, pictures of old Blanchardstown and a great big fireplace on the ground floor.
There are real trees planted around the building which to me is a great ornamental piece. Along with the mix of trad pub is a more modern warehouse feel as they have left ceilings and main walls exposed to show air conditioning units. It kind of makes the place look incomplete but I can see what they are trying to achieve with the look.

Ordering, Eating, Drinking

So, unlike other restaurants you have to know your table number before you order. We chose a table and walked to the bar to order, turned around and another couple had taken our table. It wasn't a hassle as we watched out for the food to arrive and called out but we learned our lesson early! If you are going to have food make sure to leave a jacket down or nominate someone to mind the table!!

The food came out within minutes of ordering! I ordered a Chicken Jalfrezzi and Gemma ordered Tennessee Burger and Fries. The portion sizes are decent so if I was paying I wouldn't be disappointed. My meal in particular tasted really nice. The rice was well done and the Jalfrezzi was the nicest I have tasted in a long time. You also get Poppadoms and Naan bread with order. The naan was a little doughy. They use only the best ingredients and even the likes of condiments are of high quality. I like that when a restaurant doesn't skimp on the ketchup brands!
I have noticed the prices in Blanchardstown are slightly higher than Dun Laoighre but only by a Euro.

We also got some cocktails with the meal. They have a basic selection of cocktails that are right up my street like Woo Woo's and Daiquiris. They will be selling at like €7 which is more expensive than TGI Friday's so I will be sticking to Vodka (Absolute is the brand they use) or beers. You will get a pint for €3.50.

Service

As I was invited to be served by training staff I was not expecting anything spectacular but I was happy with the service I received. From the greeter to the bar staff, everyone looked happy to be working and were bending over backwards to make the stay a pleasant one. The bar man who took our order was clearly struggling to manage till and he had support from one of his colleagues who was also training.  I love seeing people helping each other out!I heard a number of other people pass remarks about some of the staff being weak behind the bar. I feel like a lot of the staff are inexperienced but this training weekend has helped them ten fold.

Conclusion

I had a great time during my visit to The Great Wood. The service was better than I expected, these people will improve quickly so please be kind if you are dropping by! The food was absolutely gorgeous and the place looked great. I actually felt at home in the place which to me says a lot about an establishment. I would definitely go again. In fact I am going to drop by for dinner tonight!

Let me know what you think if you are dropping by over the next few weeks!
Check The Great Wood out on Facebook here!

Fuschia Dramatise Palette review | Beauty

Hey everyone!

Before I start I am not the biggest fan of Fuschia. I like to give the benefit of the doubt with every brand so I did go into this as if I had never used any of their products before.
I was gifted the Fuschia Dramatise eye shadow palette at a recent event and as an eye shadow lover I was curious to see if it would work out.

I was surprised at how disappointed I was in the quality. Maybe it's because I have been using high end brands for the last few years. Surely that can't be an excuse though?. I want to explain my reasons as I feel bad giving negative feedback but I have to be honest so here it goes!

No identity

The palette came no information other than the company name and palette name.
There is nothing available on line to indicate if the shadows have a name or number to identify the colour. There is nothing to tell you the weight of each pan so you can't even see if you really are getting value for money.
Single pans are €5.50 each and this palette is €25 for 7 shades VS other brands.

Chalk away!

The shadows are highly pigmented but they are like chalk. When you sweep the brush across the pan a lot of product transfers onto the brush. (Check out the picture below). That normally wouldn't upset me but even after tapping the excess off the brush you are still left with fall out on the face after applying the shadow!
Every crumble means waste for me and for €25 a palette you wouldn't last long before hitting the bottom of the pan!

Smoky eyes are a no no for this palette!

Even though I like the colours there isn't a huge amount you can do with the shades that are there. Ideally in a palette I would like to have the choice of at least two mattes so I can create a decent smoky eye. None of that going on here, you wouldn't even get a transition colour.
For non make up people, the transition shade goes into crease and helps when blending the darkest colour in a smoky eye look. It is not recommended to have anything other than matte with maybe a tiny amount of sparkle in the crease.
Look at the pictures below. It should help you see why shimmer isn't the best option in the crease. The blending is shocking. I know I know, that's my own fault but you try blend a shimmer into the crease!

In conclusion, if they added some matte shades and did something with the formula to make the shadows less cakey then I would happily repurchase. Until then, this one is going into storage.

What do you think? Do you like Fuschia products? Or do you have any tips to help me get the most out of the palette?

Viktor & Rolf 10 Year anniversary | Beauty

Hey everyone!

Viktor & Rolf launched Flowerbomb 10 years ago! Can you believe it? Flowerbomb holds different memories for Women worldwide. Like the scent from their wedding day or a special birthday. I remember the first time I bought the fragrance. Back in the day when I was able to spend my wages on pretty things and not electricity! It was exclusive to Brown Thomas for the first six years and even now is only available in select fragrance counters. I usually get mine in Debenhams. When Viktor & Rolf invited me to celebrate their anniversary I expected good things! They blew us away!

We were treated to pink lemonade and a flower arranging lesson with the talented team from The Flower Factory Rathmines. The flowers chosen for us to work with were signature scents for the Flowerbomb range. We used flowers such as Roses, Peony and Sweet Pea.

Happy 10 years Viktor & Rolf. What is your favourite scent from the Viktor & Rolf range?

VHIWMM Donations and Weight loss Chats | Life

Hey everyone!

As you all may know by now Gemma and I walked in the marathon on June 1st in loving memory of my husband Stephen but also to raise funds for St Francis Hospice, Blanchardstown. If you have read my last few posts you will know the story but for all you new friends have a read here to get up to date!

Once we decided to take part in the marathon Gemma and I realised we needed to improve our fitness levels drastically. We both joined our local gym and I took up the services of a Personal Trainer once a week. It was the best decision I could have made as the workout I was doing was more strength training and was not helping me improve my overall fitness levels. Ben the trainer put me on a 5 day workout plan that involved all over body workouts incorporating weights and something called Xfit. Burpees are not my friend... :(

The trainer also put together a nutrition plan for me. Not going to lie, I suck balls at the plan. Literally every day I do great until the evening rolls around and the boredom sinks in. I already know that stems from my emotional over eating. I am obviously grieving but I have been doing this for years, I over eat when I am stressed, bored, depressed so it is hard to break the habit. I went up to almost 17 stone at the time Stephen died. I stopped looking after myself and all my energy went into making my number one happy. Stephen loved his food. I ate said food with him...
I have lost about two stone though so far. I am currently floating around 14St 13lb mark. I have been so busy the last few weeks that I have fallen off the wagon though so I am trying to kick myself in the hole to start moving again,

Anyway, sorry for the ramble, back to the marathon. Over the course of the journey I focused on online donations and my job allowed me to hold a fundraising day for the hospice. Gemma contributed with cash donations and my Dad brought her card in to his job for sponsors. We are waiting on the last few bob to come in but we are sitting on €1500. Myself and Gemma are over the moon to be handing so much money to the hospice. They really deserve every cent they get!
Thank You to Sky Ireland, Securispeed, Dublin Business School and all you lovely generous people for your support!

We flew through the marathon in 2 hours. I was so glad we got the work in as I wasn't sore or aching after, just tired! Poor Gemma still has blisters from her runners and we got soaked through with torrential rain during the walk!
Over all it was an amazing experience. I would do it again in a heartbeat! Next year I want to be running!

Here are some pictures for you to enjoy! Go on now chicken haha

See you soon!

How to: GHD Soft Wave YouTube | Beauty

Hey everyone!

Today I wanted to try something different and post a YouTube video! My editing skills are improving slowly and I am pretty happy with this project!

I recently got the hair chopped again in the L'oreal Academy. I went for the long bob (LOB) look that is so popular right now and I think it really suits my face shape.
Kim Kardashian is probably the most famous celebrity sporting her hair like this but also my favourite blogger Lily Pebbles has been wearing her hair like this forever. :)
@lilypebbles

I will show you how to create a soft wave using GHD or any straightener really using a simple technique. Let me know what you think! I am really excited about hearing your feedback!

Game of Thrones Location Tour Review | Life

Hey everyone! (This is a wordy post with lots of pictures FYI)

Last week I joined my sister and her college class on a trip to Northern Ireland for the Game of Thrones Location Tour. I have to admit I have only recently become a Game of Thrones fan. I found four seasons on Sky through their box sets (Game of Thrones is exclusively shown in Uk and Ireland through Sky), decided to take a chance and watch a few episodes. Two weeks later I was four seasons down and hooked! When Gemma told me that she was going on tour I jumped at the chance! Before I carry on just to let you know - Even though we were on a location tour it wasn't focused on Game of Thrones so you may enjoy looking at the scenic pictures! Almost all Game of Thrones filming is done across the Antrim coast and all interior scenes are shot in the purpose built Titanic Studios in Belfast. Further filming locations include Croatia, Malta, Morroco, Spain, Iceland and United States.

We travelled from Dublin to Belfast at 7 am. The sun was splitting the stones as they say! We met our tour guide and fellow passengers on Glengall Street in Belfast City Centre at about 10 am, We travelled with Mc Combs Travel. The coach was new and was spotlessly clean. I was super happy about that as I am a clean freak and I wouldn't have been able to relax otherwise. The tour guide was also the driver and his name was Derek. Gas man so he was. As he drove he gave us the down low about the day ahead. I hadn't checked this before we left so nearly died when he told us we wouldn't be back to Belfast until around 7 pm. I was also pleasantly surprised when he told us about a stop at Giants Causeway, mainly because Gemma has always wanted to go and  I swore after the last time I wouldn't drive all that way again! I hate driving long distance; that was Stephen's job!

First stop was at a Norman Castle in Carrickfergus. There is something about the beauty of Norman architecture that really gets me every time! King William of Orange spent time here before the Battle of the Boyne in the 1690. There is a life size figure of him over looking the castle wall. It is worth a look if you ever find yourself in the area.

After a quick photo opportunity we moved on then towards the Glens of Antrim. One of the passengers who is GOT mad went on line before the trip and told us there is a Quarry on the way to the Glens that housed Castle Black! The driver wasn't able to stop due to strict rules with site owners but we got a sneaky picture in while he drove past. I am such a geek I am getting excited thinking of it again!!! I would have loved to see the set. I felt slightly deflated as we drove on! Imagine my nose stuck to the window like a kid!!!

Next stop made up for the disappointment as we stopped in Cushendun to visit the caves. On the way we took in some of the most breathtaking scenery you could imagine. It was pretty clear day so we could see the outline of Scotland! It is 12 miles away from Antrim coast. There's a bit of trivia for you! Anyway, Cushendun caves is the spot where Milessandra gave birth to the dark shadow in Season 2. It was amazing to instantly recognise the scene setting and imagine the actors at work!

We moved on to Ballintoy Harbour for another photo opportunity. It is known as Pike Harbour in the show and was used during the scene where Theon Greyjoy returns to Pike in Season 2. It was also used by Arya at the end of Season 4 to get the ship to Bravos.
The guide Derek pointed out things of interest and showed us clips of episodes that featured the site. He also spent some time talking about the economic effect Game of Thrones has had on NI economy and also the view people may have due to the troubles. It was nice to hear that as it gave our fellow passengers an idea of the real Northern Ireland and not the painted picture in the media.

After Ballintoy we stopped for 2 hours at the Giants Causeway. Derek used the old Irish myth of Finn McCool to explain the reason for the stones as a joke after he spoke about the Geological reason. I forgot how much I loved the story of Finn and his Scottish rival Benandonner! We lunched at the Cause way Hotel. McCombs Travel provided us with Game of Thrones themed menus before arrival to pick meals at £10 each. I declined offer but when we reached hotel and seen the hotels menu was around £2 cheaper for similar meals. I would expect to see that sort of mark up but in my opinion, it is fairly cheeky all the same.
The causeway itself was packed with tourists from around the world. The Giants Causeway is definitely worth a trip. It is fascinating to see the rock formation but it is one of those places that you would go to once and that would be your lot.!

We left the causeway at about 4 pm and travelled to Larrybane. This is where Renly Baratheon had set up his camp and where he swore allegance to Catelyn Stark in Season 2.

The last site of the day was at The Dark Hedges. I had never even heard of this place before the trip but it is famous world wide apparently. The beech trees are famous due to their unusual shape and  line an avenue that leads to an ancient stately home.It almost feels like something from a Brothers Grimm fairytale. It is also the road used in a scene where Arya escaped Kings Landing in Season 2.

The tour ended and we travelled back to Belfast in peaceful silence. As promised by Derek we got back to Glengall Street before 7 pm and our onward journey to Dublin had us home by 9:30.

The highlights of the trip was definitely to see the amazing natural sites along the Antrim Coast. The tour guide Derek was a fantastic host and he made the day go a lot faster than imagined. The actual location sites blew me away. There was no denying the sites were instantly recognisable and I could imagine watching wildlings running through fields or a battle taking place. It made me respect and feel proud to be from a country that holds such beauty!

The low points of the trip was that we didn't see as much of the Game of Thrones sites as we would have liked. The tour was not all about Game of Thrones, just references to the show here and there when we reached sites. I understand it was made like this to suit all levels of show watchers. It did kind of feel like a dressed up Giants Causeway tour though. Also at the causeway seeing the price of the food made me feel a little robbed.

I was allowed a discount to go on the tour for group rates so I paid €30 but the standard charge for this tour is £35 per person and additional £10 for lunch optional so it was definitely value for money. Especially considering the distance travelled and the excellent service from Derek. That man knows his stuff. You could ask him any question and he would have an answer for you. I would recommend him as a tour guide any time.
I hope you found this review helpful. Would you ever consider going on a day trip like this?

Enjoy the pictures
